An Afrofuturist Education Project Based in the Black Radical Tradition
Afrofuturism connects the past, present, and future through Black history, culture, and creativity. It asks the question: what does the future look like if Black people are centered, free, thriving, and powerful? The Black Radical Tradition is an ideology with a long history that traces the lineage of Black people fighting for liberation and creating freedom beyond the systems that harm us. Both of these ideas are intimately tied together at Wake Productions. Dismantling colonialism as a system of hyper-extraction and imagining new ways of living, governing, and relating to one another and the earth beyond these violent systems. We stand as a trustworthy source for accessible, accurate, peer-reviewed educational content via curriculum, comics, zines, video, and consulting.
Areas of Focus
-

Historical Narratives
Much like Wake, our graphic novels are based in historical research. We use this art form to bring the story to life and to educate readers on real events, people, and periods from the past.
-

Comics & Zines
We have a line of comics in development called Free The Land, which will be an anthology of anti-colonial movements in American History among Black and Indigenous people. The anthology will center Indigenous scholars and artists.
-
Curriculum
It is difficult to find quality, fact-based curriculum outside of our official education system. We create and provide peer-reviewed and scholarly rigorous curriculum with teacher’s guides, powerpoint presentations, and core curriculum standards alignment.
-

Story Liberation (Consulting)
We consult scholars and academics who are looking to break down complex subjects to reach wider audiences, and film and TV creators who need to include historical accuracy in their works.
